Business Performance:
Endesa
CERVANTES – Smart metering technology, incorporating Endesa’s expertise with Enel Distribuzione experiences of large scale smart meter rollouts, in order to optimize functionality and business processes particularly in the roll-out phase.
This system includes innovative features both in equipment and in functionality with minimum disturbance of the customer during the replacement campaign that resulted in the full benefits of the smart metering solution from day one of deployment.

Innovations
Automatic reconnection of customers
Auomatic detection of meters on low voltage grid - no need for GIS maps
Automatic adaptation to topological changes in the grid during maintenance and installation.
The narrow-band PLC bandwidth with capacity to implement additional functions
The meter as Gateway - for optimum speed of rollout when concentrators may not be in place
Concentrators which have the capacity to be deployed for future smart grid applications include a GPRS module.

Why this project was shortlisted.
These innovations have resulted in a projected saving of €164 million by 2015, as well as €6 million annual savings in operational costs. Projecting these savings until the year 2020, the total savings total over €256 million.

Customer Excellence: SEAS NVE
An innovative customer segmentation program which allows detailed customer communication programs. The Meter Hunt (www.maalerjagten.dk).  Customers are motivated to join by the chance of winning a monthly prize, by submitting monthly meter readings (via web or sms). The readings  classify each contestant in an energy class from A to G, which raises awareness of their energy consumption. Based on the information given by the customers to The Meter Hunt, the customers are given individualised consulting on how to reduce their consumption.

Customer benefits
To many customers energy is a low interest product. But with The Meter Hunt  energy becomes visible and interesting phenomenon. The Meter Hunt is used to segment customers and allows interactive communication. It has become a completely new customer communication channel supporting targeted messages based on usage.

Why this project was shortlisted
A highly innovative way of engaging the customer, which has lead to energy efficiency, increased customer loyalty, and an in-depth understanding of individual customer needs.

Innovation: Electronic Housekeeper
A wireless and environmental console, designed for the intelligent home, which saves energy, money, and CO2. The utility can use private homes and offices for grid management, by flexible consumption and automatic power cut off for selected customer appliances (like electrical heaters) when frequency is low. The more appliances the end user connects, the more both the end user and the utility know about consumption patterns and the easier it is able to stabilize the network and optimize power production.

This project allows customers to
Manage their own energy and services usage based on statistical analysis, in a stylish and engaging way.

Why this project was shortlisted
Highly innovative home automation and feedback made stylish. Features of the electronic housekeeper include the control of electric appliances, monitoring of water use, play music via MP3, give traffic and weather updates, show on-line TV and make free internet calls. A range of additional features are being developed and all consoles will be updated automatically at no charge.
